Practicum
School Psychology students serve as externs during each of their four years of training. Practicum experiences are designed to develop student competencies in evidence-based practices (EBPs) that include cognitive, academic, emotional, and behavioral assessment, treatment planning, and intervention implementation. Particular emphasis is placed on conducting assessment, therapy, and consultation services in a culturally and ecologically sensitive manner.
Practicum duties reflect a graduated progression through increasingly integrated and independent tasks, with the typical student acquiring at least 1000 hours of supervised practicum experience by the end of their training.
- First year externs build interviewing & psychoeducational assessment skills.
- Second year externs expand assessment skills by adding functional behavioral assessment (FBA) & intervention experiences (e.g., behavioral intervention & cognitive-behavior therapy).
- Third year externs provide in-school prevention, intervention, & consultation services, with a secondary focus on continued assessment.
- Fourth year externs integrate the assessment, intervention, & consultation skills acquired in previous years for application in community-based settings.
